How teachers affect students’ learning process inside the classroom

Deniz Salli – Çopur, a Turkish teacher, in her article “Using Anecdotes in Language Class”, argues that “anecdote often have an emotional component such as happiness or sadness, excitement or embarrassment, or amusement or disappointment” (2008, p. 34).
The provided arguments in the text allow me to agree that the author with her nonscientific research based only on what happens in real life in different schools, strongly believes that the use of anecdotes as a technique to gain students attention and interest could also create a context of learning full of meaningful and memorable facts.
The article follows pieces of argumentation about the usefulness of anecdotes in the language class, where we are attracted to follow the sequence of how, when and why to use anecdotes during the lesson.
This article is based on many researchers’ works which allow Salli-Çopur to have complete and reliable arguments that support his ideas. There are six narrative elements of an anecdote which are focused on the way they should work, how relevant are they, what make the anecdote interesting and the signs of an anecdote such us key words to introduce an anecdote. Moreover, talking about the use of anecdotes in the class the author states that “teachers usually have an additional intention in mind: teaching objective to describe, explain, clarify or emphasize an aspect of language or content” (2008, p. 35). Here we can say that there are different groups to describe anecdotes; one is focused on the ones which are planed and come up to the lesson as a part of it where an exercise will come next to it. Then, there are anecdotes that are part planed and part unplanned, where the anecdote appears into the lesson because the teacher had it in mind but he/she tells it with improvised words in a certain time of the lesson. And, the last kind of anecdote is the one that is absolutely not prepared or thought previously, they come up naturally during any part of the lesson.
Every anecdote is accompanied by results that allow the teacher to say if the anecdote is beneficial or not in the language class. Some benefits the author explains have to do with the statement that “anecdotes are one of the most economical, easy, and enjoyable ways to introduce meaningful language an content, to practice language skills and sub-skills, and to help manage classes of various ages and proficiency levels” (2008, p. 36).
The benefits that the author provides are based on her experience on using anecdotes in her classes. Those benefits refer to the importance of having an interesting way to call students’ attention. On the other hand, students can also add their own experiences which allow the discussion, the sharing of mutual feedback, the reinforcement of students’ story telling skills, conversational skills, the improvement of their cognitive skills, their ability to synthesize and withhold information, and finally the reinforcement of the students’ ability to have friendly relationships between teacher-student and student-student.
This article is effective in the way teachers realize that the benefits of the use of anecdotes in the lesson and teachers are able to practice their sense of humor or at least star using it. I think it is a well organized article but which could include more evidence that will help the understanding of having planed lessons and adding information that is connected and relevant to the main topic of the lesson.
In conclusion, I think the author’s argumentation that the use of anecdotes can help to gain students interest and to create a meaningful and memorable context of learning, improve our conception of the importance of sharing experiences with students and to make an enjoyable lesson when students and teachers feel a connection after shearing mutual anecdotes.

What Teachers can do to improve test scores.

Burns, David. “Will I do as well as on the final exam as I expect? An examination of students’ expectations.” Journal of the scholarship of teaching and learning 8.3 (2008) : 1-19. In the article Burns, a teacher λ an author of several books and articles, expresses the idea that students’ anticipations about their results in an exam will depend on their performance. The author supports his declaration by giving some arguments which support his proposal by saying the students’ anticipations of results in a test may be affected by the time they spend on preparing the exam and the effort they put on preparing it.
Even though his arguments about students’ anticipations are strongly supported with evidence, it is necessary to say that those arguments lack of suggestions about how it improve students’ expectations in the case it is necessary.

There are some factors which could contribute in order to have high and low expectations of the result in an exam. According to that, the author states that students tend to find out the causes of their fails in the exams and try to give solutions for the next performance in a test.
Burns also suggests that students who anticipate a high performance, reflected in a high grade on the exam, will think that their performance in the exam could be a sign of the preparation and effort they put on it.

Religion in schools.

It is common knowledge that people in general have their own opinion about religion. Everything depends on what are their beliefs and how they have been educated about this controversial topic. Moreover, if we take into account the idea of religion under the point of view of movies and TV, we have to think on the impact that the “opinion” of the movie has in society. On the other hand, it is important to go beyond the idea of religion as a topic to talk about with friends or in and see how this topic is related and reviewed in schools.

From the point of view of a Catholic school, religion is part of the curriculum where teachers are able to talk about religion and give students the idea of being Catholic. The same thing occurs with other religions such as Evangelism or Judaism. However, the idea of “teaching” religion does not necessarily mean that students have to accept those beliefs and values and profess what it dictates. Some teachers, priests or nuns have unacceptable ways to deal with the religion they profess because they want people and students to deeply believe on what they say about religion. Some times that people find people who strongly think the opposite, but they do not know how to have an intelligent conversation based on the sharing of thoughts. Although, there are people who have consistent beliefs which allow people to listen and meditate about what the other is saying, even if it is not related to your own way of thinking. The most important thing about religion is the way people receive it and think about it as a critical thinker.

Every school have a particular way of professing their religion, but it is necessary to say that every student is able to decide if what that religion says is what they really want to follow or if they really feel it goes with their beliefs and thoughts. Here teachers should be the mediators between different ideas that students could have, but never the teacher should be the owner of an idea or belief.

Correction - The Last Semester

I remember that I always like (T) The Beatles, in special the songs of Lennon and Harrison. Well, they have died. Lennon in 1980 was murdered (wo) for a fanatic (p) on the other hand Harrison died of cancer.

Harrison was less known for his music, but had many good songs. Between they (sm= famous songs are??) “While my guitar gently weeps”, “Golden slumbers” and “I Me Mine” this songs I like (wo).

However, Lennon was always an influential (ww= influence) in the Group. His songs were very good.

I would like it (nn) if, they were still alive, because I would like (sm=to) sing some song (f= some songS) with them and compose a theme. (Confused sentence= I would like, if they were still alive, to sing some songs with them and compose a theme).

I would like to ask Lennon, Why you went out of the band? To Harrison I would like to ask him, How was lived (f= was to live) a famous life in the past with the band?

I wish they were still alive (f), because the music in this time can (t=could) be very different and very good.

Speaking (ww) of other members of The Beatles such as Paul and Ringo, in the actuality (wws= nowadays) they are singers. Paul sings in (nn) around the world the songs of The Beatles and his songs (wo). Two year (f=yearS) ago he sang in the Grammy for first time. He sang the song “Let it be” (p) I like (t) (sm) see singing a (NN=so Spanish) Paul in the Grammy, because I remember the successful past of The Beatles.

I like this photography

Hello

Well in this occasion, I (sm) speaking about of (nn) the photography that I like most.

Well, this photo was taken for (f) the Napo that traveled with us.

I would like travel to the this Country

Hello!

In this occasion I (sm= am) talking about the (nn) somewhere (?) country that I would like (sm=to) visit in the future.

Well this country is Nepal. This country I like for her traditions (wo) and the architecture of buildings. In addition, in the north of (sm) country is located the Tibet. The Tibet is a city of the Republic Popular China, but the people of this place (in the most Tibetan monks) think in the autonomy of the country.

In other context in this place is located the mountain most big (wo= biggest mountain) of the world, The Everest.

In addition, in Nepal her (f) (f= there are religions like) religions are Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, but in (nn) the tradition tell (f) that the Buda Shakyamuni was born in Lumbini, in the South of Nepal, for this reason Nepal is a place sacred (wo) for the Buddhism.

I would like (sm) travel to this country with friends, girlfriend or my family, (p) however I think that nothing I would accompany, but I would travel alone (?).

Well, if I travel to Nepal, (sm= I would) visit a lot places, such as the mountainS, the Buddhist temples in special the Bouddhanath. Also (sm) visit the Lumbini town, typical place of the Buddhism. The Bhaktapur City or the Devout City, this is a medieval city that (sm= is) located in at (just one prep) an altitude of 1.401 (it’s located at 1.401 mts of altitude).

Technology = a better world???

I'm not (sm= a) really fan of technology, but I can't deny that a lot of technological devices are important pieces in my daily life. My mother's laptop and wi-fi at home have become super necessary, handy and useful for me. I can't even imagine me in the "metro" or in a bus without my mp4 music. . . just because I hate every noise around me (people's comments indifferent for me, bus noise, etc)

I always ask myself what about our lives without those gadgets... (sm= it) will be complicated, horrible, awkward or just (ww = maybe) will be better in all terms. I don't know... I just know that if we could have knew that some people were going to do or create stupid things through Internet (p) our world would be better... may be.

Let me give you an interesting poem that I found on the web...may be it sounds funny... but it's true.

"Here global warming is a reality, not a prediction."

Since I discovered Internet as (ww = is) part of my daily life, I’ve been in contact with many web sites. Those are since Google and the news to “Fotolog” and “Facebook”. The last two web sites are the most visited for me, (p) but the one which I really enjoy and never stops surprising me is Facebook. I found this site because a friend invited me to take a look at it, (p) but(nn) at the beginning I didn’t pay attention (sm). Once, in my free and boring time, I decide (t) to go into “the (nn) facebook (cl) world” and try to discover it, but you can’t imagine what I found there! There were many childhood friends, all my school classmates, friends around the world, interesting ways to communicate, nice people who want to meet you, music, books, and many things!!!

The impact of this site on my life is relevant in terms of communication with people interesting for me, because I can know what they are doing or what happens with their lives. But sometimes I don’t mind if I didn’t update my profile or my likes or whatever. I just enjoy it in my free time and when I don’t have anything else to do.
Internet is just an easy way of entertainment, and facebook (cl) is just a hobby for me.

Do you have a Facebook profile??? if not... you might try it here

Kes, Kes, Kes continues!

Well, after Billy buried Kes his life totally changed. Billy was really sad because he had lost something important for him, almost a best friend. Billy would never forgive Jud for killing Kes and their relationship went worse and worse. Once Billy was able to try to give Jud a chance and make up with him, waiting an apology from Jud for being so cruel, but Jud was not able to do such an effort.

After Kes died, Billy discovered that his interest on animals goes beyond a simple hobby of trainee a bird. He decided to work hard and save money to buy a big cage to put in there the ill birds he found and try to help them to recuperate. When they recuperated at all, Billy released them. Billy thought that was great idea, and he decided to do the same not only with birds, but whit all kind of animals like dogs, cats, etc.

On years, Billy became very famous doing this charity for animals, and he started to gain financial backing from many private companies. He was not rich, but he lived in a beautiful house with his family. When Jud and his mother realized that he was in good conditions of life, they went to Billy’s house to try to have any help from him. Even though Billy was really deeply hurt by what they have done with him, he decided to help them without resentment. Then, they all worked together helping animals.

Opinion

I really think that this idea of creating a blog and post every week encourage us to be aware of our writing mistakes and our classmates ones. I think I have improved my writing and the skill of correcting my own mistakes and realizing about others’.

When we started this second semester with the idea of correcting posts of others students from U. de Chile I thought that we will be frequently correcting their post and being helpful for them, but is had been really different. May be we could have more activities correcting their posts and make them realize about that, but I think that when we do something with their posts, they do not know about our corrections.

Correction Post: "Math is not for me!!"

During my whole school time, I always felt that Math wasn’t for me. This subject is compulsory for everybody and everywhere, and even if (sm) go abroad to China I will find it. I couldn’t escape from it. I studied Math for about 12 years at school, and when I entered at the university I find it there too. That was awful for me, and I couldn’t believe it. Then I had to resign myself and (nn) to accept it anyway.

I didn’t like Math because I’m not very good with numbers and solving math problems, (p) and (nn) I always had bad marks in this subject, and my teachers didn’t help me a lot to understand it because they were really bad. I just don’t like it.

I know that math is something which is (nn) present in our daily life, and even if I don’t like it I have to face it anyway.

Writing Improvement

Only Felipe wrote the last post on his blog and I tried to make some corrections on it. After reading his post I could realize that his writing problems have to do with the wrong word order and the spelling mistakes. On his two posts before he made the same kind of mistakes.

For example, in his word order mistakes he says: “the effect greenhouse” instead of the greenhouse effect, or “My personality I will assume that change in the future”, instead of saying “I assume that my personality will change in the future”.

Also he tends to confuse some words which could change the whole meaning of the sentence. For example, he says “warning” instead of warming when he talks about global warming.

I really think that he should read once again his writings before choosing the last he will publish. Sometimes, you can realize about your mistakes when you carefully read what you wrote. In this way while you read you realize about your mistakes.

I believe that when you are recently starting to learn a new language, those kinds of mistakes are made by different kind of students. Some of them realize about their mistakes before others, but while they are practicing they start to be concerned about what are their weaknesses and strengths.

The most difficult things to correct are the tenses, because you may not know the writer’s intension and if he is talking abut the future of the past. By this I mean that some students tend to confuse tenses because they forget about with tense they started to write and they do not make a difference among the past, present and future.

Correcting some mistakes

While I was reading Andrea’s blog I could realize that she has a lot of interesting things to share. Her writing is attractive, but there are many mistakes that she definitely could improve after realizing about them. Her posts are characterized by spelling mistakes which are constantly repeated such as profetional instead of professional, or carrers instead of careers. There are a lot of punctuation mistakes and many long sentences. But the reader can understand almost everything she wants to say. Capital letters, wrong tense and word order are some others mistakes also.

Felipe’s posts are really good, but he definitely could improve them if he chooses the correct tense and change the word order. He use to write as he writes in Spanish, for example when he says: “Well, I find the English is very difficult for me”. Here he wants to say that he thinks that English is difficult for him. I think it is a current mistake on Chilean English learners. There are some sentences that I really couldn’t understand, such as “The big most classmate speaking to English good, my sister study English”. Finally the current mistakes that we can find in his writing are missing words, wrong tense and word order.

Being helpful...

I really think that the idea of giving some feedback to other students is very challenging for us, especially for me. I like the idea of being helpful for somebody else... it makes me feel good.
We need to have this oportunity to find and correct other's mistakes, because we as future teachers will do it all the time with our own students.
I would like that at the end of this semester, the students from U. de chile could say that they improved a lot their writing in English and that we were very helpful for them.
